Reach for Organisations
We work alongside established organisations, charities and NGOs who are already meeting many of the needs of the communities they work with. However, in doing so they have become aware of yet more needs, in particular related to communication, opportunity and a perspective of hope and expectation.
An important factor is effective knowledge transfer, giving trainers strategies that pass on the skills using a sustainable peer mentoring network, delivered in such a way that the individuals will be able to carry on with it when they have gone. Using Footnotes helps them to come out of those learning situations leaving behind people who can really go forward by themselves, for themselves.
What we offer
So often, one of the biggest challenges for a team on the ground is to assess and prioritise needs, to ensure they provide the most effective and sustainable support they can. Footnotes provides a very accessible combined assessment and project planning tool that helps discover both need and skills within the community they are working, even down to the personal needs of a family group or individual.

There are three main ways that NGOs and charities choose to bring us in alongside what they’re doing. One is to train trainers within their organisation, creating Footnotes Facilitators in the modules that are most relevant to their work (visit the Footnotes site to access the full list of these modules). The second is to invite a Reach team to come with them, bringing a partnership project alongside what they are doing. The third way is through consultation at an organisational level, which is discussed in more detail below.
Footnotes is a set of grid-based strategies that use visual multilayered thinking (VMT) methods, and it has many different applications as we have already seen. However, sometimes an organisation needs an introduction to what VMT is more generally — to better understand the types of learners, thinkers and situations that they might need to be dealing with in cross-cultural, cross-lingual situations — before they are introduced to the ways that Footnotes specifically can enable the understanding and empowerment of individuals. To do this we offer general VMT consultation.
We also offer consultation as to how an organisation can benefit from integrating these techniques into their own operations, in particular to help them communicate between very different types of team member. For example, between those on the ground locally and office staff who are perhaps in another country. So if they have workers who are the right person for their context but aren’t necessarily English speakers, or even reader/writers in their own language, they may well benefit from using a Footnotes grid system in the running of the organisation itself.
We can also help people to draft formal documentation, either for within their organisation or to an external group or government.
